Authentic Influence

What's the secret to your success?

What comes to mind when you hear this word influence.     As an executive, leadership coach,  I have to admit the word influence is often heard from the mouth of my clients, across multiple scenarios.

Be it simply to inspire, motivate the team for better cohesiveness leading to better performance, to gain better inter departmental/team relationship, agreement among peers, and so on

“The key to successful leadership today is influence, not authority. “Ken Blanchard

Agree?

The old traditional style of leading by authority, by telling, by dictating is no longer of fashion,  or rather we have learnt from experience, from research,  that people perform better not by being told rather  by being given the authority, given the autonomy,  given the trust, given the ownership.

When we lead,  it is never about us,  but about the growth and development of the others because people resist change that is put on them not when it is done with them.  We know there is a difference!

So, what is influence and why authentic influence

Influence refers to the power or capacity to have an effect on the thoughts, actions, and behaviors of others. It is the ability to shape opinions, guide decisions, and inspire change.

Influence can manifest in various forms. It can come from individuals who possess knowledge, expertise, or authority in a particular field. They may have a strong presence, charisma, or persuasive communication skills that captivate and inspire others. Additionally, influence can arise from the trust and respect that someone has earned through their actions, integrity, and consistency.

In other words,  Influence is the ability of an individual to transform and shape the opinions of others. Influencing at the workplace, then, is a process of transforming the behaviors of employees. For example, a team leader can influence subordinates through his communication, policies and actions.

People with influence at work tend to be more trusted and recognized. And often, influential people are also more effective leaders. Although, you don't have to be in a leadership position to build influence among your peers and superiors.  For the ability to influence is not just the keys skill of leaders but any one of us who wants to build a better relationship, increase in productive and performance.

Like a half glass of water,  whether you see it as half empty or half full depends on your perspective.  Likewise, influence can be positive or negative.

Positive influence entails using one's power to create a beneficial impact on others. It involves leading by example, uplifting and empowering others, and promoting values that encourage growth, well-being, and positive change. A positive influencer inspires and motivates others to strive for their best, fostering an environment of collaboration, innovation, and personal development

However, influence can also have negative connotations. Negative influence involves manipulating or coercing others for personal gain or leading them astray from their own values and best interests. It can undermine trust, create divisions, and hinder progress.

In truth, influence is a powerful tool that can shape individuals, communities, and societies. It can be used for positive or negative purposes, depending on the intentions and actions of those wielding it. The impact of influence is far-reaching, and it is essential to be mindful of its potential and use it responsibly to create a better world.

Hence Authentic influence goes beyond the superficial charm or manipulation tactics but stems from a place of integrity, honesty, and sincerity. It involves leading by example and inspiring others through one's own actions, values, and genuine passion.   Just imagine,  seeing a person who is full of zealousness and passions in dancing or someone who believes strongly in the project they do,  how will that make you feel about the dancing or about that project  that they are doing.

Yes, curiosity, inspiration to follow, to find out more and very likely the trust in the person or the work they are doing because they have shown through their actions.

In other words, authentic influence embodies the power to make a genuine and positive impact on others.

It requires individuals to be in alignment with their true selves, embracing their unique qualities and perspectives. By staying true to themselves, they can then authentically connect with others, fostering trust, respect, and genuine connections.

With that, authentic influence encourages individuals to listen actively and empathetically to others. It involves recognizing and valuing diverse perspectives, allowing space for collaboration and growth.    Influence is never about what I want from you rather is about what I understand through active listening what you want and then communicate that in a way that you are able to accept.

In other words,  Authentic influencers understand the importance of building meaningful relationships and uplifting others, rather than solely focusing on their own agenda or personal gain.

Ultimately, authentic influence is about making a positive difference in the lives of others by being true to oneself and inspiring others through genuine connections, actions, and values. It is a powerful force that has the potential to transform individuals, organizations, and communities for the better.

What is your intention of your influence and are you influencing by your words or by your acts & values?

If I may add one more,  have you notice how well you have listened?
